September 6: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass / Preparándonos para Celebrar la Misa Dominical

As we prepare for Sunday’s Mass, it would be a wise move to remember this: the mission Jesus gives His followers (and this has been true since the beginning of the Church) is so important that nobody should commit to it without prayer, reflection, and discernment.

We all know what it is like to start something and then watch our enthusiasm wane. So, Jesus calls us to a mature consideration of what it really means to follow Him, to cast our lot with Him ... to give Him our whole heart, mind, and soul.

What is the “discernment” that Jesus asks for? It involves listening of the Gospel together, paying attention to and doing our best to discover His call today, receiving His grace in the Sacraments, allowing ourselves to be awakened to the charisms or gifts that He has given us, and then marching forward together in faith, hope, and love.

Let us pray. “God of the ages, you call the Church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times. Grant us the wisdom which your Spirit bestows, that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic Word and complete the work you have set before us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

El Evangelio del domingo (Lucas 14, 25-33) nos va a recordar que “seguir a Cristo” es una aventura llena de riesgos y exigencias. Nuestros cálculos siempre se quedan cortos. Sólo con la sabiduría divina podemos arriesgar y seguir a Cristo a pesar de todos y de todo.

En otras palabras, ser seguidor de Jesús, seguir su camino, es caro. Tiene un precio. En la vida cotidiana decimos con frecuencia, “mi familia, mi dinero, mi grupo, mi país….” Todo gira en torno a mí, a mi libertad, y a mi elección. Es como somos poseídos por el “yo.” Pero Jesús nos pide relativizar todo lo que es pasajero y adherirnos a lo que es eterno. 

El precio que pagar es hacer de Dios el único necesario, el único absoluto. Nada ni nadie es más que Dios para un creyente. Nada ni nadie merece nuestra absoluta lealtad. Nada ni nadie es digno de todo nuestro amor.

La Eucaristía es el mejor tesoro que tenemos los católicos en este mundo. Celebremos el domingo, día de descanso, con gozo, escuchemos la Palabra, y abrámonos a la acción del Espíritu.
