September 13: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass / Preparándonos para Celebrar la Misa Dominical

Paradoxically, we affirm our passion for life under the sign of the Cross, which in ancient times was a cruel, inhuman instrument of execution, the most frightful form of death. The Church throughout the world celebrates this weekend the Feast of the Exaltation (or Triumph) of the Holy Cross. This is also our parish’s patronal feastday.

Echoing Jesus Himself, we and the whole Church still strongly oppose all forms of torture and above all the death penalty – and yet our feastday will find us honoring the Cross on which an innocent Teacher and Healer was put to death, He who had spent His entire life helping others.

We are challenged each day to absorb “the Easter meaning” of whatever suffering comes our way, trusting that truly powerful grace flows from the Cross. Of course, we don’t just focus on our own Crosses and the burdens of life, the Cross of Christ empowers us to share in the struggle against oppressors of every sort. We can best honor His Cross if, like Him, we stand up for those in our times who are unjustly treated and marginalized, those who are weighed down and never given a fair chance.

From the Way of the Cross: “We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.”

Las Cruces son siempre duras de llevar y estamos tentados de quejarnos ante los sufrimientos y pruebas de la vida. Pero Jesús fue delante de nosotros: cargó con la Cruz por nosotros y murió por ello, y después Resucitó. 

Dios es más fuerte que la muerte, y la necedad y el escándalo de la Cruz, según San Pablo, nos ha salvado de nuestros pecados y la muerte. La Cruz fue el camino de Jesús hacia la victoria. Para todo discípulo, de Él éste es el camino para la vida y la Resurrección. Vamos a celebrar “el Triunfo” de la Santa Cruz el domingo, nuestro “día festivo patronal.”

Hemos sido marcados con el Signo de la Cruz como pueblo salvado para servir al Señor. Recordando la Cruz en la Fiesta de su Exaltación, tenemos que aprender como perdonar, como sobrellevar las cargas de otros, y como aceptar la realidad de la vida como pueblo que espera y confía en la bendición de Dios.
