November 26: Patient Endurance / Resistencia Persistente

As an encouragement to His disciples, Jesus makes this important promise, “By your endurance you will gain your souls.” (Luke 21, 12-19) Another translation is, “By patience you will save your lives.” It is one of those wise sayings that can fit into many situations. It occurred earlier in St. Luke’s Gospel when Jesus mentioned that the seed in the field bore fruit “through patience.” It is also echoed in St. Paul’s urging to “patiently do what is right.” (Romans 2, 7). Later in Romans, he says that “affliction produces patience, and patience produces character, and character produces hope.” (Romans 5,3). In the end, what is being called for from all of Jesus’ followers is consistency, dependability, and conviction that sooner or later God will justify us.

Having been justified, it is important to realize that our relationship with Jesus has to be the most important relationship in our lives – it will have an impact on all of our other relationships, and on all that we say and do. We aren’t called to just keep the faith in some kind of private space, but live it visibly and tangibly. In our culture today, that is not easy. But Christ Himself gives us the resources we need to live as His true disciples and witnesses to our faith. His enduring presence gives us endurance. too.

Las Escrituras nos dicen de muchas maneras que nuestro Bautismo nos ha hecho testigos de Cristo. Pero no siempre resulta camino fácil, especialmente en tiempo de profunda transformación, e incluso más todavía para feligreses en tiempos de persecuciones. Llegarán a veces dificultades de parte de aquellos más cercanos a nosotros. Pero estamos seguros de que Cristo está con nosotros y de que, por medio de su Espíritu, Él nos dará la elocuencia y sabiduría  suficientes para saber qué decir y qué hacer en la persecución y en tiempos difíciles. (Lucas 21, 12-19)

El Señor mismo nos dice: “¡No tengan miedo!” De todos modos, siempre es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, ¿verdad?

Oremos. “Oh Dios, creemos que tus planes para nosotros son de paz y valor, y no de miedo o temor. Guarda nuestros ojos abiertos a los signos de la constante venida de Jesucristo tu Hijo. Ayúdanos a comprometernos sin descanso a hacer crecer tu Reino entre nosotros, llevando a cabo tus planes de paz y amor y de todo lo que convierte a nuestro mundo más en mundo tuyo según el Reino. Y que todo esto abra el camino para llegar a tu eterna morada. Te lo pedimos por Cristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
