November 22: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass / Preparándonos para Celebrar la Misa Dominical

“If you are King … save yourself.” (Luke 23, 35-43)

As we will hear this weekend, the soldiers jeered at Jesus on the Cross. So did the rulers. And one criminal, crucified along with Jesus, taunted Him about saving Himself. But they all misunderstood what “save yourself” means. The soldiers, rulers, and one of the criminals thought being saved meant that Jesus should come down from the Cross, avoid any more suffering, and certainly avoid death.

But Jesus shows us through His words to the “other” criminal what “being saved” really means: “you will be with me in Paradise.” Salvation, then, is less a matter of being saved from, than a matter of being saved for.

Saint Paul expresses in his Letter to the Colossians (1, 12-20) what we have been saved for: the inheritance of holiness, membership in the Kingdom of the beloved Son of God, a share in Christ’s fullness, reconciliation with all things, and eternal peace.

El domingo, vamos a celebrar la Fiesta de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo.

Al término del camino de un año litúrgico, la Iglesia profesa que el que fue crucificado y Resucitó es el Señor del mundo y de la historia. La luz de la Pascua se proyecta sobre todo el cosmos y lo ilumina. Es la luz del amor y de la verdad, que rescata el universo de la muerte y renueva el designio de la creación, para que todas las cosas adquieran su pleno significado y se reconcilien con Dios y entre sí.

El Señor del universo nos hace fijar nuestra mirada en Jesucristo, verdadero Rey, Dueño, y Señor de la historia, no como rey temporal, sino como Rey espiritual y de vida, que quiere reinar por el amor en el corazón de cada persona, de cada familia, de cada comunidad, y de toda la sociedad. Y Él nos llama a todos sus seguidores, no sólo a vivir el amor, sino a ser constructores de la civilización del amor, para que en nuestro mundo reine verdaderamente su justicia.
