May 31: The Visitation / La Visitación

The Visitation of the Blessed Mother to Saint Elizabeth is celebrated throughout the Catholic world today. The Venerable (St.) Bede (in the early 8th century), wrote: “Mary’s words, ‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord’ are words to live by. With these words, she first acknowledges the special gifts she has been given. Then she recalls God’s universal favors, bestowed unceasingly on the human race. When we devote all our thoughts to the praise and service of the Lord, we proclaim God’s greatness. 

Our observance of God’s commands, too, shows that we have God’s power and greatness always at heart. Our spirit rejoices in God our Savior and delights in the mere recollection of our Creator who gives us hope for eternal salvation.”

St. Paul, in his Letter to the Galatians, speaks of “faith working through love” or faith which expresses itself in love. That was the kind of faith Mary had: her visit to her kinswoman St. Elizabeth was her faith expressing itself in love. This is the same mature faith that we are all called to ... and Mary points the way to such faith.

Celebramos hoy la Fiesta de la Visitación. La Virgen María, en pleno reconocimiento de la maravillosa acción de salvación del Señor y de la sombra del Espíritu, canta: “Mi espíritu se regocija en Dios.” Su canto es el anuncio de la salvación de los pobres, los afligidos, y los hambrientos. Ella nos ofrece la oportunidad para ver que el Niño en su seno, en medio de un increíble anuncio de salvación del mundo, representa en el abrazo del Cielo y el mundo, la Divinidad y la humanidad. La estéril Santa Isabel da fruto; la imposible madre por su virginidad, María, abre la puerta a la salvación y la deja entrar en el mundo.

En ese abrazo está resumido prácticamente toda la historia de la salvación. Del Dios que elige al improbable y al pequeño, que puede convertir lo imposible en realidad innegable. Del cumplimiento de todas las promesas atravesando el pequeño cuerpo de una joven. Y también el fin del pecado y de la muerte.
