There is an account in John 17, 11-19 (while the disciples are with Jesus at the Last Supper), where the Gospel describes how Jesus had watched over those disciples and protected them. Now His prayer on their behalf continues His loving care. St. John explains how Jesus’ intercessory prayer is an extension of the many ways He had served His disciples since they first began to follow Him. In a similar way, our prayer for others is an extension of our care for them; it is a form of service.
By His intercession for His disciples (of old and in the present) Jesus continues to teach us the value of all intercessory prayer. Intercession for others, after all, has been at the heart of the Church’s prayer life since the time of our beginnings.
St. Paul, too, often mentions intercessory prayers for the communities he had established and he called on his people to pray for him. Both Jesus and St. Paul, of course, were heirs to a Jewish tradition that greatly valued this form of prayer. Praying for others is one of the ways we express our communion with others in Christ. If someone asks you to pray for them today, jump at the chance!

(Filipenses 2, 4 ).
