May 2: Saint Athanasius / San Atanasio

We celebrate today the feastday of St. Athanasius. He lived in a tumultuous time (at the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourth) and he was the Patriarch of the Church in Alexandria. Although the Roman persecutions were over by his time, the new crisis of his day was the threat from the Arian heresy. He tirelessly defended the divinity of Christ in the face of the heresy, which maintained that Jesus was no more than a human being. St. Athanasius suffered much and we rejoice today that we can celebrate his courage and his perseverance.

We thank God that St. Athanasius was given the grace to remain strong against what probably seemed at times to be insurmountable opposition. He lived his office as Bishop completely. He defended the true faith for his flock, regardless of the cost to himself. In today’s world we are experiencing this same call to remain true to our faith, no matter what.

San Atanasio (295-373), patriarca de Alejandría, fue un obispo que vivió en un tiempo de grande crisis para la Iglesia, inmediatamente después de las persecuciones romanas. Defendió la divinidad de Cristo contra el arrianismo, que decía que Cristo no era más que un hombre. Él sufrió mucho por su fe y hoy celebramos su día festivo.

Según el Papa Benedicto: “El futuro de la Iglesia dependerá enteramente de los que vivan con profundas convicciones la plenitud pura de su fe. El futuro no depende de los que se acomodan a las circunstancias del momento. No depende de los que critican a otros, pero se promueven a sí mismos como la norma infalible. El futuro de la Iglesia quedará determinado también esta vez por los santos – por gente que puede ver más que otros, porque sus vidas logran una mayor dimensión. En la medida en que una persona vive y ha sufrido, en esa misma medida puede también ver.” 

Oremos. “ Oh Dios, lleno de sabiduría y verdad, tú confiaste a San Atanasio la misión de defender la divinidad de Cristo. Ayúdanos a ver en Jesús  -que es uno de nosotros- más que a un simple hombre, a tu propio Hijo Divino. Y da a tu Iglesia líderes (especialmente nuestros Cardenales) de una grande fe, visión, y sabiduría, que nunca nieguen a Cristo aun frente a persistente problemas y que ayuden a los demás  a mantenerse siempre fieles a Él. Te lo pedimos por el mismo Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
