June 27: The Sacred Heart of Jesus / El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

Based on the “Heart of Jesus” as a symbol of love, the Church strongly promotes devotion to Christ as “the incarnate love of God.” A key text in St. Luke’s Gospel is about Good the Shepherd who, on losing one stray sheep, leaves the other ninety-nine in the wilderness and goes after the lost one until He finds it. Later, in St. John’s Gospel, Jesus transfers this Shepherd imagery to His own life’s work. He himself became the Good Shepherd, who laid down His life for the sheep. This developing awareness that Jesus is “the visible manifestation” of God’s love in our world gradually led to an explicit homage to the Heart of Jesus as a central symbol of God’s tremendous love for us.

We pray: “Almighty God, grant that we, who glory in the Heart of your Beloved Son and recall the wonders of His love for us, may be made worthy to receive an overflowing measure of your grace. Through Christ, who lives and reigns with you, forever and ever. Amen.”

Ya en el Antiguo Testamento, el Señor se reveló a sí mismo como un Dios que ama y se preocupa por su Pueblo, y que está profundamente comprometido en la historia humana. Él se enamoró del hombre, escogió para sí una nación, y selló una alianza con ese mismo Pueblo. Cuando éste fue infiel, por no poder entender que Dios les amaba, se mostró a sí mismo en la persona de Jesucristo, con un Corazón con rostro humano que pudiera sentirse herido y derramar sangre, para decirnos: “Fíjense qué lejos puede llegar el amor. ¿Pueden ustedes ahora creer en mi amor, acogerlo, y amarme a cambio?” Es precisamente este corazón amoroso de Dios lo que celebramos al honrar al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

El amor, en el Corazón de Jesús, es mucho más que simple sentimiento. Significa entrega sin medida a toda la persona, sean cual sean el costo y las consecuencias.

Oremos. “Padre, danos un corazón como el de Jesús – sincero, sencillo, humilde, y fuerte – todo atento y listo para hacer tu voluntad, y, al mismo tiempo, respetuoso de todos y abierto a todos, deseoso de acoger a todos y a cada uno según su propio paso y de todo corazón. Por eso le proclamamos como nuestro Señor por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
