June 22: The Day of the Lord / El Día del Señor

Today, we celebrate the solemn Feast of Corpus Christi. It is, in a sense, three Feasts in one: the Feast of the Eucharistic sacrifice, the Feast of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and the Feast of the Real Presence of Jesus.  

Corpus Christi is what we call a “doctrinal Feast” and it was established for three purposes: to give God collective thanks for Christ’s abiding presence with us in the Eucharist and to honor Him there; to instruct the people in the Mystery and devotion surrounding the Eucharist; and to teach us to appreciate and make use of the great gift of the Eucharist, both as a Sacrament and as a sacrifice.

Food for thought (for this week): A seminarian who gives tours of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome was leading a group of Japanese tourists who knew absolutely nothing of the Catholic faith. With particular care, he explained the great masterpieces of art, sculpture, and architecture in the ancient church. He finally concluded at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the Basilica, trying his best to explain quickly what it was. As the group dispersed, an elderly man, who had been particularly attentive, stayed behind, and said, “Pardon me. Would you explain again this ‘Blessed Sacrament?’” The seminarian did, after which the man exclaimed, “Ah, if this is so, what is in this chapel is a greater work of art than anything else in this church.” Can we prolong today’s Feast of Corpus Christi to help us value and appreciate the worth of Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist, in our Church, and in our hearts?

La forma más frecuente de contacto con la Iglesia es, para casi todos los católicos, la Misa Dominical. Es bueno preguntarnos hoy: ¿Por qué estamos alrededor de su Mesa tan frecuente? ¿Qué hacemos? ¿Por qué ha de ser la Eucaristía la que nos una como comunidad? ¡Porque la Eucaristía es el Señor mismo! 

En la Eucaristía, el Señor nos da, tan generosamente, su propia persona con nosotros, no precisamente para nuestro consuelo, sino para poseernos y transformarnos con su mismo espíritu de entrega a Dios y a los demás. La infinidad de gente, hambrienta de tantas maneras, con hambre de alimento y amor, de aliento y ánimo, de justicia y solidaridad, de algo o alguien en quien creer, y de aceptación y entendimiento, no puede ya dejarnos indiferentes. Que el Señor no dé la gracia y el valor necesario que se olvida de sí mismo y se entrega generosamente a los demás.

Nuestra tarea espiritual: Diariamente, llenos de alegría, demos gracias a nuestro Dios, que se cuida de nosotros – dándonos a Jesús como nuestro Compañero en la vida y como nuestro Alimento para el camino.
