June 18: Giving Glory to God / Dando Gloria a Dios

In His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew ch. 5-7), Jesus says, “Be careful not to parade your good deeds before others to attract their notice.” But earlier in the same Sermon, He has said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven.” There seems to be a tension between these sayings. Yet, there is truth in both.

This is part of what some have called “the genius of Catholicism” – “both/and” and not “either/or.” We are not to hide the light of our faith, or obscure it under a basket. Rather, we are to both publicly proclaim our faith by our lifestyle and do so by how we actually live – always in order to give glory to God in heaven.

En su Sermón de la Montaña (Mateo capítulos 5-7), Jesús nos habla sobre el compartir sincero y generoso. Los que dan y comparten generosamente y con espontaneidad son ministros de la bondad de Dios. Dan gracias a Dios por lo que ellos mismos han recibido, y se enriquecen todavía más al compartir. La limosna, el dar (y también la oración y el ayuno) deben hacerse honrar a Dios, dice Jesús, no para complacerse en sí mismos o para ser admirado y aplaudido por los demás. 

Para reflejar: Si amamos solamente a los que nos aman, hacemos simplemente lo que hace también la gente que no cree. Nunca habríamos de excluir a nadie de nuestro amor, ya que ésta es la señal distintiva de los seguidores de Jesús: “Amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos.”
