June 17: Honoring God / Honrando a Dios

The retired Major League Baseball player Mike Sweeney (a devout Catholic) used to sign autographs for young people and he would always write his name and Matthew 5, 18. If sought out in the Bible, those who received the message would find: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Sweeney’s hope was that young people, especially, would hear how important it is to live our faith, be seen doing it, but hope that all the honor and glory would be directed to God.

Both young and old, we do well to hear Jesus as He urges us not to parade our good deeds before others to attract their notice. Rather, we should somehow show our love for the Lord (and His people) by the way we live and the choices we make. All of us are called to exercise the kind of humility that seeks, first and foremost, the Kingdom and the glory of God. Notice how this is expressed in the Lord’s Prayer: “Hallowed by your name, your Kingdom come, your will be done.”

En Mateo 5, 1-6 y 16-18, Jesús nos recuerda que la limosna (el dar) y también la oración y el ayuno, deben hacerse honrar a Dios, no para complacerse en sí mismos o para ser admirado y aplaudido por los demás. Sería bueno para nosotros recordar que Dios está presente en cada acto de amor y en cada compartir. El auténtico amor es discreto, como el de Dios.

Jesus también nos dice que si amamos solamente a los que nos aman, hacemos simplemente lo que hace también la gente que no cree. Nunca habríamos de excluir a nadie de nuestro amor, ya que ésta es la señal distintiva de los seguidores de Jesús: “Amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos.” Él nos ha llenado generosamente con múltiples dones. Y Él quiere que seamos “ministros” de su generosidad para cada uno de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Que Él nos ayude a expresarle nuestra gratitud y a revelar su bondad compartiendo lo que somos y tenemos, con total alegría y sinceridad, como lo hizo Él.
