June 16: Peace and Harmony / Paz y

What does it mean to “break the spiral of violence and evil?” With wars, domestic violence, political oppression, and killings ... we cannot just stand aside and do nothing. Each of us, in our own circumstances, is called to confront and eliminate, as much as possible, any threat to the peace and harmony that the Lord wants for us.

Jesus tells us, in Matthew 5, 38-42, that we cannot respond to unjust people or unjust situations in the way our ancestors did: “An eye for an eye....” Such an approach is simply not Christian. This is not a call for passivity, however, but an invitation to actively discern how to best defend what is good and right, but also defend those people who face unjust treatment by others, including the poor, the disadvantaged, and those pushed out to the margins of our society. We are, indeed, called to actively build up the peace and harmony that the Lord has in store for us.

¿Qué significa “romper la espiral de violencia y maldad?” Guerras, violencia doméstica, asesinatos …. Cada uno de nosotros, en nuestro propio lugar, tiene que eliminar el mal: en sí mismo, y, cuanto nos sea posible, en nuestra propia familia, ocupación, empleo, círculo de amigos y vecinos, y comunidad.

Jesus nos dice en Mateo 5, 38-42 que no debemos responder al injusto con venganza. El principio ”Ojo por ojo y diente por diente” no es cristiano. Debemos más bien sufrir la injusticia y dejar que la gente abuse de nosotros, al menos cuando la injusticia es cometida contra nosotros mismos.  

Pero, otras partes de la Escritura nos dicen que debemos defender a otros si han sido injustamente maltratados y agraviados, como los pobres y marginados, y que debemos luchar contra la injusticia por medio de la bondad y del perdón.  Así es como estamos llamados a romper la espiral del mal y establecer paz y armonía.
