June 11: Saint Barnabas / San Bernabé

The Church honors St. Barnabas today. St. Paul owed much to him and to his missionary zeal, for St. Barnabas involved St. Paul in his work among the Christians of Antioch, who were of pagan origin. The Acts of the Apostles calls Barnabas “a prophet and teacher” and “a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith.” Inspired by the Spirit, the leaders of the community of Antioch sent St. Paul and St. Barnabas on their first missionary mission.

St. Barnabas was not one of the original Twelve Apostles, yet the early Church recognized in him the heart of a true Apostle. Why? Because he accompanied the others in humility, he took the joy of the Gospel wherever he went, and he taught not only with his words, but with his life. St. Barnabas, pray for us.

Hoy celebramos la memoria de San Bernabé. San Pablo debió mucho a este gran apóstol, ya que San Bernabé lo involucró en el trabajo misionero entre los cristianos de Antioquía, de origen pagano. El Libro de los Hechos describe a San Bernabé como un “profeta y maestro,” “un hombre bueno, lleno del Espíritu Santo, y de mucha fe” al que le bastaba que un pagano creyera genuinamente en Jesucristo Resucitado para admitirlo en la comunidad cristiana. Inspirados por el Espíritu, los líderes de la comunidad de Antioquía enviaron a San Pablo y a San Bernabé en misión apostólica. Fue compañero de San Pablo en su primer viaje.

Oremos. “Señor Dios, que la Iglesia de hoy, en cualquier parte del mundo, envíe buenos y celosos hombres y mujeres a anunciar el Evangelio. Llena a todos los Bautizados y, en especial, lo misioneros con el Espíritu Santo y con gran fe, para que puedan tocar los corazones de los demás y los ganen como discípulos y amigos de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
