July 31: St. Ignatius / San Ignacio

Seventeen years after the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, St. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) that was to play so prominent a part in the “Catholic Reformation.” He was an implacable foe of Protestantism. Yet the seeds of “ecumenism” may be found in his words: “Great care must be taken to show forth orthodox truth in such a way that if any heretics happen to be present they may have an example of charity and Christian moderation. No hard words should be used nor any sort of contempt for their errors be shown.”

Mientras se recuperaba de una herida contraída como soldado, San Ignacio leyó vidas de santos, al no tener otros libros a mano. Estas lecturas le hicieron reflexionar seriamente sobre el sentido y finalidad de la vida, hizo peregrinaciones, y por fin decidió servir a Dios.

La “Compañía” que él fundó (los Jesuitas) debía estar a disposición del Papa, para servir a las más urgentes necesidades contemporáneas de la Iglesia. En tiempo de San Ignacio, los miembros de su nuevo Orden contribuyeron decisivamente a contrarrestar las herejías, reformando la Iglesia, y comenzando misiones en el extranjero. Para él, la acción apostólica debe tener como base la oración y la reflexión. Sabio consejo éste, también para nosotros hoy.
