July 26: Saints Joachim and Anne / Santos Joaquín y Ana

The World Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated for the fifth time tomorrow, the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents of Jesus (which is today). The theme chosen by Pope Francis before his passing is: “Blessed are those who have not lost hope.” (The Book of Sirach 14, 2)

The Catholic Grandparents Association has been at the forefront in campaigning for a greater recognition of Grandparents and the Elderly for their role and vocation in passing on their faith to the next generations. The announcement of a new Church-wide celebration for Grandparents and the Elderly came in answer to their prayerful request to the Holy Father. At the very least, pray today and tomorrow that those who have been blessed with many years of life will be reassured that they are loved and that they are needed.

Nada se nos dice en los Evangelios sobre los padres de María, la madre de Jesús. Pero si aparecen en los Evangelios “apócrifos.” Está claro que María no apareció de la nada. Lógicamente tuvo padres. De ellos nos sabemos absolutamente nada pero, dado las virtudes que atribuimos a María, terminamos suponiendo que sus padres eran también buena gente. Incluso, muy buena gente. Por eso les hemos terminado declarando santos.

En ese no saber, es mejor pensar con sencillez que María nació en el seno de una familia normal de aquel tiempo. Allí creció y maduró como persona en el hogar de Santos Joaquín y Ana. Algo tuvo que aprender en el seno de aquella familia sobre cómo relacionarse con Dios. No podía ser de otra manera en aquel mundo. Así se iría preparando para asumir las sorpresas que le iba a dar su hijo Jesús a lo largo de su vida.

Oremos. “Señor Dios nuestro, antes de la llegada de Jesús había mucha gente esperando la venida del Mesías: profundos creyentes y también gente sencilla, los pobres. Te damos gracias por estos creyentes, y te pedimos hoy, en esta fiesta en que honramos a los padres de María, que aumentes nuestro anhelo de que tu Hijo Jesucristo venga más profundamente a nosotros, y que muchos que todavía no creen, finalmente crean en Él y lo acepten como su Señor y Salvador, que vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
