July 14: St. Kateri Tekakwitha

We celebrate today the feastday of the patron Saint of Indigenous Americans: St. Kateri Tekakwitha. It has been said that “holiness thrives on the Cross” and this was certainly true for this woman known as the Lily of the Mohawks. She suffered mightily, but she also had what all of us need: the support of a community. She had a good mother, helpful priests, and Christian friends. These were present in her life and allowed her to blossom into a model of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. She always sought union with God in Jesus and the Spirit, self-discipline, and charity (in the midst of her suffering) for her brothers and sisters.

Santa Kateri Tekakwitha fue una de las primeras mujeres americanas de los pueblos originarios (de la gente indígena) que fue canonizada. En la fe Católica, veneramos a quienes son santos y santas como modelos del seguimiento de Cristo. A Santa Kateri la vemos como inspiración para centrar nuestras vidas en Dios. 

Aunque hay algunos pueblos originarios que sienten una gran devoción por Santa Kateri, no todas las personas comparten el mismo sentimiento. Cada grupo étnico en los Estados Unidos y Canadá tiene su propia experiencia y perspectiva sobre la colonización y la Iglesia. Es importante que nosotros seamos lo más respetuosas y solidarias con sus culturas y experiencias.
