February 6: Saint Paul Miki and His Companions / San Pablo Miki y sus Compañeros

At our School Mass today we are celebrating the feastday of St. Paul Miki and his Companions. In Japan, in 1597, all 26 of these faithful followers of Jesus were martyred. They died for the faith that they absolutely refused to renounce. Our children will hear today that these were real people. They had a real faith in Jesus. And they really did die because they were willing to follow the Lord with their whole heart, mind, and soul. No one could make them think otherwise. No one could make them act otherwise.

Well, we are real people, too. Right? We have a real faith, too. Right? We have been invited to follow Jesus with our whole heart, mind, and soul. Right?

So, “Please, Jesus, love us, guide us, and protect us today … so that no one can make us think otherwise. And no one can make us act otherwise. St. Paul Miki, pray for us. Companions of St. Paul Miki, pray for us. All you holy men and women, pray for us. Amen.”

En 1597, veintiséis cristianos (religiosos y laicos) fueron clavados en la cruz y murieron como Jesús, en Nagasaki, Japón. El más conocido entre ellos era el Padre Pablo Miki, pero había también un francisco mexicano que había trabajado anteriormente como unos diez años en Filipinas, el Padre Felipe de Jesús. Su fiesta nos recuerda que el Evangelio no está destinado solamente a países tradicionalmente cristianos. En cualquier parte del mundo hay personas que pueden seguir a Cristo de modo radical, quizás con mayor consistencia de lo que nosotros estamos dispuestos a realizar. La Iglesia está destinada para todos.

Oremos. “Oh Dios, veneramos hoy a los misioneros y a su grey de la comunidad cristiana de Nagasaki, Japón, en quienes Cristo vivió y en quienes Él fue crucificado de nuevo. Concédenos que los mensajeros y maestros de la Buena Noticia de Jesús sean uno con sus fieles en la vida y en la muerte y se entreguen en amor y servicio los unos a los otros y a ti, por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
