February 5: Saint Agatha / Santa Águeda

Saint Agatha is the patroness of breast cancer patients and nurses. According to some stories, she was born in Sicily of noble parents in the third century. Her loveliness and kindness came to the attention of Quintian, governor of Sicily. He put her into prison for being a Christian, and there she underwent the extreme tortures that finally killed her. It is certain that she was a martyr and she is still honored these many centuries later for her courage in suffering and in remaining pure for the sake of Christ.

La Iglesia celebra hoy la fiesta de Santa Águeda, “la bondadosa,” patrona de Sicilia, quien rehusó casarse para dedicarse totalmente a sus compañeros cristianos haciendo trabajo “diaconal” en un tiempo de persecución, especialmente cuidando de los pobres y de los enfermos. La denunciaron, y la torturaron hasta la muerte, en el año 251, en tiempo del Emperador Decio. Ni amenazas ni torturas la hicieron tambalearse, y menos claudicar. Ella es la santa patrona de cáncer de mama.

Oremos. “Señor Dios, tu Hijo Jesucristo advirtió a sus seguidores que serían perseguidos por su causa. Pero nos dijo que no tenemos que temer, porque enviaría su Espíritu para poner en nuestra boca lo que hayamos de decir. Que nosotros, como Santa Águeda, demos testimonio de nuestra fe y de nuestro amor con todo nuestro ser, sin vacilar, dudar o temer, porque tú estás con nosotros por medio de Jesucristo, nuestro Señor. Amén.”
