December 4: Day of Prayer / Día de Oración

Jesus said to His disciples, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 7, 21

We live in a world where it appears that the people who shout the loudest get the most attention. Even a casual look at cable television or social media will provide ample evidence of this. But we all know that the person who makes the most noise is not necessarily the one making the most progress. Nor is the one making the most noise the one who is worth listening to. As the saying goes, “Talk is cheap.” It is easy to fall into the trap of saying what we think others want to hear or, in our prayer, saying what we think God wants to hear. 

Jesus’ mother Mary is one of our guides this Advent. When she said “yes” to God, she meant it, she didn’t waver, she didn’t babble endlessly ... but her clear and concise response to God was born from her quiet trust in Him. Can we make her trust our own? Are we willing to be quiet on occasion and listen for where God would have us go, to what He would have us do?

A wonderful opportunity for “Advent quiet” awaits us today in Eucharistic Adoration. Our parish church will be open today and we will offer a “day of prayer” before the Blessed Sacrament (from 8:30am to 8:30pm). Join us!

En la vida de hoy, a menudo rumorosa y dispersiva, es muy importante recuperar la capacidad de silencio interior y recogimiento: la Adoración Eucarística nos permite hacerlo, no sólo centrándonos en nuestro “yo,” sino en compañía de ese “Tú,” lleno de amor que es Jesucristo, “el Dios que está cerca de nosotros.”

La Adoración Eucarística es una invitación de amor de parte del Señor, y nuestra respuesta de amor es el permanecer en silencio ante Él, como María de Betania sentada a sus pies. (Lucas 10, 39) Habrá Adoración hoy adentro de nuestro templo parroquial: 8:30am – 8:30pm. Todos están invitados a rezar con nosotros.

Según el Papa León: El permanecer en silencio ante el Santísimo o, cuando no está expuesto, simplemente ante el Sagrario, le enseña al alma a abrirse en la dulce presencia del Cordero. Quizá podamos compararlo con un niño amamantado por su madre. El pequeño está contento y satisfecho; se sabe cobijado en el amor de la madre. Lo mismo sucede con nuestra alma: cuando está junto al Señor, está “en casa.” Allí, puede acoger a profundidad la misteriosa presencia de Jesús en la Santa Eucaristía. Bebe la presencia de Dios. Podríamos decir también que está, como el Apóstol San Juan, “recostada” sobre el pecho del Señor. (Juan 13, 23)
