December 20: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass / Preparándonos para Celebrar la Misa Dominical

The Prophets of our long tradition, like Isaiah, have given us “Advent language” like, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” In ancient times, that meant something practical: it meant “repair the roads!” Jerusalem, after all, was surrounded by desert, and desert roads got covered in sand very easily. If some great personage was expected, the first thing to do was to clear the roads, to clear the sand off the roads. And what is sand? It’s the trillion little things, all the “stuff” that fills and clogs our life.

Never before has there been an age when human beings were so clogged with information or so assaulted by language on every side – morning, noon, and night. Today we have wonderful roads for driving on, but the roads that are clogged are the psychological and the spiritual ones. The Prophets, including Isaiah, couldn’t have imagined how much we in our day need to heed their advice: “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” Let's be sure to practice some quiet patience this weekend in order to do just that.

Vamos a celebrar mañana el cuarto de Adviento. Respondiendo a la invitación que hemos recibido de parte de Dios,  vamos a estar reunidos ya casi a las vísperas de la Navidad. Y nuestra celebración debe ser una espera tranquila, sincera, ilusionada del Señor. Abrámonos a su constante venida. Y que esté muy presente en nuestra celebración del domingo, aquella joven que, porque creyó totalmente en la Palabra de Dios, fue Madre del Señor. Y que esté muy presente también aquello “hombre justo” que, porque creyó totalmente en la Palabra de Dios, cuidó por ella y su Hijo.

En la palabra del Señor vamos a escuchar el cumplimiento de la profecía de Isaías: “la Virgen Madre da a luz al Hijo de Dios, al Emmanuel, al ‘Dios con nosotros’ que se hace hombre, elevándonos a la dignidad de hijos e hijas de Dios y haciéndonos realmente hermanos y hermanas entre nosotros.
