August 9: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass / Preparándonos para Celebrar la Misa Dominical

The Scriptures offered at this weekend’s Mass will remind us that faith is a special form of knowing, as when we know a friend. It touches an awareness deep within us, an awareness of God’s presence, which is always guiding and helping us. Faith is the experience described regarding Abraham (especially in the Letter to the Hebrews). It is also the experience of Jesus and other great figures in the Bible. Faith is also an on-going process: it grows as we grow; it changes as we change; and it matures as we mature. In light of this, our childhood faith cannot sustain us in adulthood, though it can develop into something that stays with us through life and can help us know and love God all the more.

Experiences of faith, then, will be sporadic, and cannot be precisely programmed. We must be open and grateful if, at privileged moments, we feel God’s special presence and friendship. But at other times life will be confusing, full of darkness and doubt, with God seemingly silent or absent. And yet, even in times of confusion and loneliness, God really is there.

At the heart of this weekend’s celebration of the Mass is this theme: this world is God’s and God really does know what is going on in it. He invites us to trust in His attentiveness to our lives, His care for us, and the fact that His grace will always provide all that we need.

Estamos invitados a realizar la misión que el Señor nos ha encomendado. La única manera de estar despiertos y velar, como el Evangelio nos dice (Lucas 12, 32-48), es sentirse responsables ante Alguien. Sólo el vivir ante Dios nos puede dar esa capacidad de “atención al presente.” 

Dios es una presencia total que nos circunda y nos envuelve. Pero no es una presencia puramente estática de algo que está ahí. Es una presencia dinámica que nos implanta en la vida y en el ser y que nos da las energías necesarias para vivir plenamente. 

Muchas personas piensan que Dios está ausente, o que está lejos, o que tarda en venir. En realidad Dios está viniendo a nuestro encuentro en cada persona, en cada acontecimiento – y de manera especial en la celebración de la Misa. Cada momento de nuestra existencia se entrecruza con la eternidad de Dios y nos ofrece la oportunidad de la salvación, de ser arrancados a esta realidad falsa y engañosa en la que nos toca vivir. Pero hay que confrontarse con esta realidad y no huir de ella. 

Las Escrituras y el Sacramento que vamos a celebrar en la Misa del domingo que viene nos van a invitar a saber que somos responsables de la construcción del Reino de Dios en este mundo que todavía tiene tantas marcas del anti-Reino. Que la celebración de la Eucaristía alimente nuestra fe y nos ayude a mantener nuestras lámparas encendidas hasta que el Señor vuelva.
