August 7: Discipleship / El Discipulado

In the Gospels, all four of them, Jesus repeatedly presents the Christian life, the plan for following Him faithfully, through three equivalent expressions. He says that faithful discipleship means, first, to renounce oneself – that is, to accept God’s way of thinking and acting rather than one’s own. Second, to take up the Cross – that is, to take the risk of undergoing the fate of the Master and give up personal comfort and security. And, third, to truly follow Him – that is, to accept His guidance and the fullness of His teaching, not only in theory but also in practice. Are we ready to do this? Is this what the Christian life means for us? Would we rather set our own course or negotiate with Him for an easier way? And if that is the case, do we really want to follow Him – or not?

En los Evangelios, los cuatro, Jesús presenta repetidamente la vida cristiana, el plan para seguirle fielmente, a través de tres expresiones equivalentes. Dice que el discipulado fiel significa, primero, renunciar a uno mismo, es decir, aceptar la forma de pensar y actuar de Dios en lugar de la propia. Segundo, tomar la Cruz – es decir, asumir el riesgo de sufrir el destino del Maestro y renunciar al consuelo y seguridad personales. Y, tercero, seguirle verdaderamente – es decir, aceptar su guía y la plenitud de su enseñanza, no solo en teoría sino también en la práctica. ¿Estamos preparados para hacerlo? ¿Es esto lo que significa la vida cristiana para nosotros? ¿Preferiríamos marcar nuestro propio camino o negociar con Él un camino más fácil? Y si ese es el caso, ¿realmente queremos seguirle – o no?
