August 24: Saint Bartholomew / San Bartolomé

The Church honors St. Bartholomew today on his feastday. The tradition of the Church is that the Nathanael in John 1, 45-51 is the same person as the Apostle Bartholomew. If so, he was an open and honest man, “in whom there was no deceit,” as Jesus said. What a great honor it would be if the Lord could call each of us “a true person,” someone in whom there is no deceit! 

Be sure to read John 1,45-51 before the day is over. And remember that, as disciples of Jesus, we are called not only to “come and see” but also to “go and tell.” This was true for the Apostles and it remains true for us: our living encounter with Jesus compels us to share the Good News with others. This mission, though, is not limited to words – it is also reflected in our actions, our choices, our priorities, and the way we live our lives each and every day.

La Iglesia honra hoy a San Bartolomé en su festividad. La tradición de la Iglesia es que el Natanael en Juan 1, 45-51 es la misma persona que el apóstol Bartolomé. Si es así, fue un hombre abierto y honesto, “en quien no había engaño,” como dijo Jesús. ¡Qué gran honor sería que el Señor pudiera llamarnos a cada uno de nosotros “una persona verdadera,” alguien en quien no haya engaño. 

Asegúrate de leer Juan 1,45-51 antes de que termine el día. Y recuerda que, como discípulos de Jesús, no solo estamos llamados a “venir y ver,” sino también a “ir y contar.” Esto fue cierto para los Apóstoles y sigue siendo cierto para nosotros: nuestro encuentro vivo con Jesús nos obliga a compartir la Buena Noticia con los demás. Sin embargo, esta misión no se limita a las palabras: también se refleja en nuestras acciones, nuestras elecciones, nuestras prioridades, y la forma en que vivimos cada día.
