August 22: A Day of Prayer and Fasting / Día de Oración y Ayuno

Pope Leo XIV has asked Catholics to observe today, August 22, as a day of prayer and fasting for peace and justice, particularly in Ukraine and in the Holy Land.

At the end of his general audience Aug. 20, the Pope noted that the Church will celebrate the feast of the Queenship of Mary on the same day: "While our world continues to be wounded by wars in the Holy Land, in Ukraine and in many other regions of the world, I ask all the faithful to spend Aug. 22 in fasting and prayer, asking the Lord to grant us peace and justice and to dry the tears of those who suffer because of the armed conflicts underway. May Mary, Queen of Peace, intercede so that people would find the path of peace.”

El Papa León XIV convocó una jornada de ayuno y oración por la paz que se celebrará el 22 de agosto, coincidiendo con la fiesta litúrgica de Santa María Reina. Así lo expresó durante su saludo a los peregrinos de lengua italiana al concluir la catequesis de la audiencia general, recordando que la Virgen, además de Reina, es “también invocada como Reina de la Paz.” 

Según el Papa: “Mientras la tierra continúa siendo herida por las guerras en Tierra Santa, Ucrania, y muchas otras regiones del mundo, invito a todos los fieles a vivir una jornada, la del 22 de agosto, con ayuno y oración, pidiendo al Señor que nos conceda paz y justicia y que seque las lágrimas de quienes sufren a causa de los conflictos armados en curso. Pedimos a María, Reina de la Paz, que interceda por los pueblos, para que puedan alcanzar el camino y la vía de la paz.”
