August 20: St. Bernard / San Bernardo

The Church throughout the world celebrates today the feastday of St. Bernard, the famous abbot of Clairvaux in the 12th century. Although cloistered away in a monastery, he reminded Popes, kings, princes, and Catholics of every walk of life of what Christ expected of them, especially in matters of unity and peace. He urged a deepened sense of responsibility for the common good, the wellbeing all people. In fact, he was called “The conscience of his time.”

St. Bernard drew the strength for his determined boldness from a strict ascetic life, marked by prayer and contemplation. He often said that Christ was the center of his life: “My daily schedule is Christ’s life,” he wrote.

Let us pray. “Lord God, we celebrate today with gratitude St. Bernard, your messenger and prophet of unity and reconciliation. Like him, let us find the strength and courage we need to speak out and act when needed – and to do so as a result of our prayer and contemplation. Help us to see the deeper realities of life and of our world with eyes of faith and love. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

La Iglesia de todo el mundo celebra hoy la fiesta de San Bernardo, el famoso abad de Claraval en el siglo XII. Aunque recluido en un monasterio, recordó a papas, reyes, príncipes, y católicos de todos los ámbitos lo que Cristo esperaba de ellos, especialmente en cuestiones de unidad y paz. Instó a un profundo sentido de responsabilidad por el bien común, el bienestar de todas las personas. De hecho, fue llamado “La conciencia de su tiempo.” 

San Bernardo obtenía la fuerza de su determinada audacia en una vida ascética estricta, marcada por la oración y la contemplación. A menudo decía que Cristo era el centro de su vida: “Mi rutina diaria es la vida de Cristo,” escribió. 

Oremos. “Señor Dios, hoy celebramos con gratitud a San Bernardo, tu mensajero y profeta de la unidad y la reconciliación. Como él, encontremos la fuerza y el valor que necesitamos para alzar la voz y actuar cuando sea necesario, y hacerlo como resultado de nuestra oración y contemplación. Ayúdanos a ver las realidades más profundas de la vida y de nuestro mundo con ojos de fe y amor. Por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
