April 24: The Easter Mystery / El Misterio Pascual

The Gospel accounts of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances and the early chapters of the Acts of the Apostles show quite clearly that it took the first disciples some time to take in the Good News of Easter. They had been so scared by the Crucifixion a few days earlier that they struggled to believe that Jesus was alive with a powerful new life. In many ways, it was just too much for them. Even today, we struggle to take in the full breadth and depth of Easter. Don’t we struggle, even a little, to really believe it?

In some ways, we do find it easier to identify with the death of Jesus than with His Resurrection. Apparently, we can more easily connect with His suffering because of the suffering in our own lives. So, like the first disciples, we stand before the Easter Mystery somewhat dumbfounded. Perhaps that is why we need the seven weeks of the Easter season to take it all in!

In the same way that we didn’t want the Lenten season to just come and go – without fully entering into it – we don’t want Easter to come and go, without letting it penetrate our minds and our hearts. Let’s be sure to make time to recognize that the Risen Lord is indeed “standing among us,” saying to us what He said to His followers in the Gospels: “Peace be with you.” His is a peace which the world cannot give. His is a peace that is the fruit of His love poured into our hearts.

Celebramos la Pascua por cincuenta días, y la celebramos de manera única alrededor de su Mesa, porque creemos firmemente que Cristo murió por nosotros y Resucitó de entre los muertos. Nos juntamos como hermanos y hermanas en torno al Señor Resucitado, para abrir nuestras mentes y corazones a su palabra, y para dejarle que nos llene con su presencia viva. Él nos dice, como les dijo a sus primeros discípulos: “Miren, soy yo mismo; escúchenme; tóquenme en la comida y en la bebida de la Eucaristía.”
 Así pues, proclamamos a Cristo Resucitado y damos testimonio de Él. Pero esta fe ha de encontrar expresión visible en nuestra vida de cada día. Ya que Cristo ha Resucitado, tiene que Resucitar también en nosotros. Tenemos que llegar a ser nuevas personas y nuevo pueblo en los que Cristo vive. Tenemos que dar testimonio de Él con toda nuestra vida.

“O Dios, que tu Hijo continúe viviendo en nuestros corazones y en nuestra comunidad por nuestra presencia atenta a los demás, por nuestra fe común expresada en obras de amor y de servicio, de gratitud, y compasión, y por nuestros esfuerzos por crear un mundo mejor donde haya justicia y esperanza para todos. Y que así caminemos juntos hacia ti y demos testimonio de que Cristo es nuestro Señor y de que vive ahora y por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
