April 18: Good Friday / Viernes Santo

The French have a proverb: “Friday is always the best or the worst day of the week. Which it is to be depends on what is in store for you on the weekend.” What is in store for us this weekend? It is Easter Sunday that we are preparing to celebrate and it is Easter Sunday that makes Good Friday good. It is the end that gives meaning to everything we are experiencing during these holy days.

It has been proposed that language can only deal with a small part of our reality. The rest – by far the greater part – is silence. Death is the great silence that ultimately falls on everyone. An early Christian writer said that if we are to hear the words of Jesus, we must hear His silence, too.

Sage advice for this Good Friday is to kneel by the Cross of Christ, but it might be even better to sit there, because we are going to have to stay a long time: all our life, in a way! We have to sit with our own pain and sorrow and resist the temptation to figure them out or “solve” them or, worse, avoid them. Only into silence will pain and sorrow pour out their meaning to us.

El Viernes Santo nos invita a recordar con veneración la Pasión y muerte de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Él está ante nosotros como el Hombre de Dolores: insultado, torturado, desfigurado, aplastado, y finalmente muerto en una Cruz con la muerte vil de un criminal. 

Sin embargo, al pie de la Cruz, no estamos lamentándonos por un hombre cuya vida fue un fracaso, ya que para nosotros la Cruz es signo de victoria sobre el pecado y sobre la muerte. Creemos que Él es Hijo del mismo Dios, resucitado de entre los muertos, y vivo en medio de nosotros. 

Ésta no es una mera historia acerca del pasado, ya que la Pasión y muerte de Jesús continúa todavía hoy en la gente y en los pueblos que sufren, en los pobres, en los hambrientos, en las víctimas de la guerra, en los marginados, en los perseguidos a causa de leyes injustas, y en todos los que son “crucificados” de cualquier manera. Pero también creemos que Cristo Resucita hoy en creyentes que luchan contra el pecado y contra el mal, y en los que llevan esperanza y alegría a sus hermanos y hermanas. Este es el modo cómo estamos unidos con nuestro Señor hoy, Viernes Santo. “Señor, por tu Santa Cruz, redimiste al mundo.”
