April 17: Holy Thursday / Jueves Santo

St. John’s  sixth chapter presents Jesus’ clearest teaching about the Eucharist in the "Bread of Life" discourse. The same Gospel, however, offers no account of the “institution” of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. Instead, we are told explicitly about Jesus’ washing the disciples’ feet at that Supper.

Let’s remember that the feet are the lowliest part of a person, the most down-to-earth! St. John is telling us that Jesus offered the most humble service possible. Then He sat down and said, “If I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.” In equivalent words, “Do this in memory of me.” Thus, in even the humblest service we do for one another, Jesus is present – we should talk about a “real presence” in this too, it is a kind of Eucharist.

With His disciples at the Last Supper, Jesus anticipated His death for us on the Cross, giving Himself fully in the Sacramental symbols of bread and wine. From then on, the celebration of the Eucharist has always been the living memorial through which we are joined to His saving act of love. It is our way to be freed from the isolation of self-concern so that we might become fully human, fully willing to serve one another, and fully aware of our need to offer ourselves in union with His sacrifice – as God wants us to do and to be.

En la Misa de la Cena del Señor, celebramos la memoria de "la Cena de Despedida" de Jesús. En esta Cena, tan cargada de emoción y significado, Jesús hizo y dijo cosas insólitas y chocantes. Como el más humilde de los siervos, Él, el gran Maestro y Señor, lavó los pies de sus discípulos y les dijo que se hicieran, como Él, servidores los unos de los otros, servidores del pueblo. Después, cuando estaban comiendo, les pasó el pan y el vino diciendo: “Esto es mi cuerpo partido para ustedes. Ésta es la copa de mi sangre derramada por ustedes. Ámense unos a otros como yo les he amado.” 

Estos acontecimientos ocurrieron hace mucho tiempo, y sin embargo, Jesús nos repite a nosotros hoy: “Hagan esto en conmemoración mía. Les he dado ejemplo. Tienen que hacer ustedes como yo he hecho. Como yo he servido, así tienen ustedes que servir; como yo les he amado, así deben amarse unos a otros.”

Después de la Última Cena, Jesús fue con sus Apóstoles al huerto de Getsemaní a orar, antes de que lo apresaran y comenzará así su pasión, para morir al día siguiente en la Cruz. Como a los Apóstoles, el Señor nos pide a nosotros también vigilar y orar con Él. 

Vamos a ofrecer unas horas de Adoración esta noche en el sótano de la escuela de Santa Cruz (hasta las 10pm). Todos están invitados. Podríamos reflexionar, en el rato de nuestra Adoración, sobre la forma cómo Jesús aceptó su Pasión por amor fiel a su Padre y a nosotros. Podríamos también darle gracias por permanecer con nosotros en la Eucaristía, para ser entre nosotros vínculo de unidad y de amor.
