By this point in the Lenten season, it is possible that we have gained enough wisdom to admit this: that God will always be a mystery to us. But Jesus has unveiled that mystery to draw us into the very life of God. He has revealed that God is, ultimately, the fullness of Love. In the words of the First Letter of Saint John, “God is Love.” In the words of St. John’s Gospel, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.” That is the wonderful mystery that we rejoice in every day (whether in Lent or not) and it is the mystery we will be celebrating in a special way this coming Holy Week.

Saints John the Baptist, Thomas Becket, Thomas More, and Stanislaus are a few of the prophetic leaders of our tradition who dared to denounce corruption in high places. They put themselves at the service of the mystery of God’s loving presence and followed in the footsteps of Jesus Himself, who pointed out the moral corruption in the religious leadership of His day. Entering into the mystery and following Jesus in this way is, as some say today, “risky business!”
